Vellepallam is another large panchayat of 1893 households in Thalanayar block of Nagapattinam district. The fishing settlement here has about 600 households.
As in other villages, this
village received official warnings only for winds and rainfall. The warning
for sea flooding only mentioned storm surges of upto 1 metre height. In lieu of
this, all of them parked their boats over 500m inwards from their regular
parking spot on the beach. However, they received no word about the possible
extent of sea flooding, which has really caused the maximum damage. Even on the department provided walkie-talkies, they did not receive any communication from the authorities. The small scale fishers have suffered the most with over 240 boats damaged or lost beyond the casurina forests surrounding the village.
The secondary school in the fishing village is serving as the relief
camp with over 400 families staying there as on 17/11/2018.
