Seruthur fishing village consists of 237 households and belongs to P.R.Puram panchayat in Keelaiyur block.
Like other villages, Seruthur received official warnings only for winds and rainfall. The warning for sea flooding only mentioned storm surges of upto 1 metre height. Hence, fishers here parked their boats 200m away from the backwater jetting inland. Usually these boats would just be tied off the backwaters.
However, they received no word about the possible extent of sea flooding. The onrushing sea rose over 4m and breached the newly constructed bridge. It entered into the backwaters , smashed and threw over the boats parked far away from the banks of the backwater. That has led to a damage of over 200 small boats.
